Currently Playing: Filling in the grain makes a big difference for a modern look

I know some people might get upset about painting oak, but these nightstands were rough. The finish was dated, and one of the drawers had something goopy inside — seriously, ewww. So, I rolled up my sleeves and got to work. I cleaned everything thoroughly, filled in the oak grain for a smoother, modern look, and patched the old hardware holes for a fresh start. My first paint choice was a light greige, but it didn’t feel right. So I pivoted to a darker color — and that was absolutely the right call. The deeper tone completely transformed the set. I finished them off with sleek black knobs and lined the drawers after cleaning out the mystery goo, making them feel fresh, modern, and ready for a new home. They just don’t make furniture like this anymore. The solid wood, the craftsmanship, the quality — it’s all there. But that doesn’t mean these pieces have to stay stuck in the past. A new color or updated finish can make them feel right at home in today’s spaces. A makeover doesn’t erase their story; it helps them live on for years to come.
