This week I refinished a beautiful tall five-drawer vintage dresser—likely from the 1940s or 1950s—that had clearly lived several lives before it found its way to me. It had been painted, stripped, stained, sealed, and refinished multiple times over the decades. The most recent finish was a bright royal blue followed by another attempted refinish, and it was in desperate need of a proper restoration. My friends at the Ace Hardware paint counter passed it along, and I knew immediately this piece deserved to shine again. I started with a deep clean, followed by a chemical stripper to remove the remaining finish from the drawers. A little lacquer thinner helped break down the last stubborn residue. The body of the dresser quite a lot of sanding, and the veneer repairs were no small task—some required wood glue and clamps, others needed wood putty and careful reattaching. Once everything was smooth, stable, and prepped, I moved on to stain. I chose a warm, dark brown stain, and the results were stunning. The different woods took the color in beautifully unique ways— the drawers and top shared the same veneer and developed a rich, warm tone, while the body of the dresser absorbed the stain differently, creating a layered, dimensional look. It’s the kind of multitone finish that only true vintage furniture can give you. The hardware originally appeared brass, but after cleaning I discovered it wasn’t—and the finish was dull, uneven, and discolored. I refreshed it with paint and sealed it to give it a clean, timeless look that fits the piece without overpowering the vintage character. Once the stain dried, I sprayed a coat of shellac and added multiple layers of protective topcoat to give the finish depth, sheen, and durability. This is one of those vintage pieces I didn’t want to modernize—I wanted to revive it. Not everything needs a trendy makeover. Some pieces carry so much history, character, and craftsmanship that the goal becomes honoring what they’ve always been while making them beautiful and usable again. There’s something special about breathing new life into a dresser like this. Traditional pieces can absolutely be refreshed and updated while still holding on to their original design. You don’t have to erase the past to make something relevant for today—you just have to reveal the beauty that’s been hiding underneath years of wear, time, and mismatched finishes.
