Sometimes the best pieces are the ones you don’t even go looking for. I found this “workbench” on Facebook Marketplace—though to be fair, it wasn’t a workbench at all when I picked it up. It was a spider-infested barn storage cabinet with a crumbling base, covered in cobwebs, sawdust, and years of dirt. Not exactly glamorous, but I knew it had potential. That’s the key with furniture flips—you have to have vision. When I picked it up, it was still completely full of old tools and hardware. Once we finally got it emptied out, I brought it home, spiders and all! I spent over two hours doing nothing but cleaning. Once it was cleaned out and pest repellant applied, I could start building it into what I had imagined: the ultimate workshop workbench. I ran to Home Depot, had plywood cut to size, and built a new solid base with casters I had on hand. From there, I sanded every inch of the piece to give myself a clean surface to work on. I mixed up a paint wash and applied it to every surface, then layered on round after round of topcoat—inside, outside, even the drawers—so everything was sealed in from its barn life. Once the finish work was complete, I added all new hardware. After a follower suggested an apothecary style, I couldn’t unsee it—so cup pulls were the perfect finishing touch. Finally, I moved it into my workshop, loaded it up, and now I have a beautiful 20-drawer workbench that’s not only functional but completely customized for everything I need to organize.
