*EXTENDED CUT* My workshop is completely dialed in, and I have everything exactly where I need it when I’m refinishing furniture. But when I come inside to create content, answer comments and questions, work on my guides, or handle the business side of Olive Street Designs, I’m usually sitting at the dining table, the kitchen counter, or wherever I can find a spot for my laptop. A few years ago, I bought a secretary desk thinking that would become my workspace, but it mostly sat in the corner and I never really used it. I finally decided it was time to create a dedicated office space that actually worked for me. Then I found this desk for free on Marketplace. It was broken, falling apart, and definitely needed work, but I loved the details and knew I could do something with it. It had simply found the right owner to bring it back to life. I repaired the broken drawer, stripped the top, added a tan wash, and painted the body in a custom color using leftover exterior paint from my house. Yes, exterior paint. Oops. I installed new hardware, moved it into the house, stood back to admire it... and immediately realized I did not like the top. So, it was time to pivot. Gel stain came to the rescue. I started with a lighter base and layered several colors to create more dimension, warmth, and texture. Once the custom glass was added, everything finally came together. Now I absolutely love it. This desk is just the beginning of the office makeover. I’m also refinishing a hutch to sit behind me, and that video will be coming soon.
