MAKING IKEA LOOK DESIGNER! This IKEA Hemnes dresser has been through a lot — it’s been my workbench for the last four to five years, taking on plenty of wear and tear. Now that I have a new workbench, I decided this old piece deserved some love and a complete makeover. **ALL PRODUCTS ARE LINKED AT THE BOTTOM** Because it was a freebie that had seen better days, I wanted to do something fun and creative. I started by adding texture and visual interest to the drawers using small wood rings, cutting them to size with my miter shears and attaching them with wood glue to create a playful, modern pattern across the top drawers. And then… disaster struck. I spent nearly an entire day trying multiple finishes on the top — from a paint wash to gel stains and glazes — and nothing was working. The colors were off, the tones clashed, and I was frustrated enough to walk away for the night. The next morning, I came back with a clear head and started over. I stripped everything down again, prepped the surface properly with a pre-stain wood conditioner, and used my go-to combination — an oil-based process with a rich dark walnut gel stain. That was the one. The grain came to life beautifully, and the color had the perfect warmth and depth I was looking for. Once the top was sealed, I masked it off and sprayed the base in a custom sage green for a fresh, modern contrast. After applying multiple coats of a durable matte topcoat, I finished the look with new champagne gold knobs. You’d never know this dresser once lived its life as my workshop storage or that it even started as an IKEA piece. This project is proof that with a little creativity, patience, and vision, you can completely transform even the most worn-out furniture into something stylish and timeless.
