Currently Playing: That was one strange Marketplace pickup...

This vintage Hepplewhite dresser had quite the journey from Facebook Marketplace to the final reveal. Even picking it up was unusual. The seller wanted the entire transaction to be completely contactless. I was given instructions on where to find the dresser, told to inspect it on my own, and if I decided I wanted it, I could pay her without ever actually seeing her. Definitely one of my more interesting Marketplace pickups! Once I got it home, I could really see what I was working with. This dresser had tons of dents and dings, areas of delaminated wood, and plenty of wear from years of use. But underneath all of that was a beautiful vintage solid wood dresser with classic Hepplewhite styling that was absolutely worth saving. I made all of the necessary repairs, cleaned up the damaged areas, and trimmed the base to give the dresser a slightly updated silhouette while still keeping the character of the original piece. For the finish, I chose Understory by Mélange Paints, a deep, earthy green that feels rich without being overpowering. I paired it with gold Hepplewhite-style hardware, which brought back some of the traditional character and was exactly what this dresser needed. And because apparently this makeover hadn't given me quite enough trouble... I had it completely finished and was just about ready to stage it when I discovered an imprint of MY HAIR in the topcoat. UGH! There was no disguising it, so I sanded the top back down, repainted it, and finished it all over again. Sometimes that's furniture refinishing. You can be one step away from the finish line and suddenly find yourself pulling the sander back out. In this video, I'm taking you through the entire makeover from the initial repairs to that very unexpected do-over at the end.
