This mid-century dresser makeover is a perfect example of knowing when not to strip and stain — and choosing a smarter, more intentional finish instead. This solid wood dresser was made by the Red Lion Company and had been refinished previously. While the piece was structurally sound, the veneer was simply too thin to tolerate another full strip and stain without risking damage. The existing blonde finish wasn’t bad, but it felt flat and unfinished — it needed more depth and presence. Instead of forcing a process the piece couldn’t handle, I leaned into color. After a thorough cleaning and careful prep, I set up my spray system and applied primer, a custom paint finish, and a durable topcoat designed to elevate the original design while protecting the surface long-term. The original hardware was in excellent condition and had already been clear coated, so it was cleaned and reinstalled without alteration. The result is a bold, timeless mid-century showpiece that respects the original craftsmanship while giving it a completely refreshed identity. In this video, I walk through: • Evaluating veneer condition and knowing when not to strip • Why paint was the right choice for this piece • My prep process for previously refinished furniture • Sprayer setup for primer, paint, and topcoat • Preserving original hardware when it’s worth saving This is a great example of how thoughtful refinishing decisions can completely transform a piece without compromising its integrity. Same dresser. Same craftsmanship. Completely new vibe.
