Currently Playing: Subsistence Moose Hunting in Alaska | First Hunt of the Season

We are getting in as many days in the backcountry as possible this hunting season in hopes of filling the freezer with red meat; be it moose, bear or sheep. We harvested a couple hundred salmon from the fish wheel, but gave a lot away to neighbors. We need more meat for winter, and now is our window to make hay when the sun shines. The first unit is open to subsistence early and Dennis headed into new country, spotting a small bull right off the bat. Spruce hen season is open too, and Lena and I took the horses out to hunt a few birds, wild forage mushrooms, and gather berries. It's still early and warm during the day, but morning and night are cool. We learned a few things last year that we are planning to put into practice for this years hunts, and cant wait to get the horses into some new country too.
