Fall has come on quick in the eastern Interior. The days are growing colder, the country is turning gold, and everywhere you look, folks are thinking about the same thing — filling the freezers before winter settles in. Our old diesel truck needed a trip to the shop for a broken shift lever, something we couldn’t mend at the cabin. That meant a twelve-plus-hour round trip to town, eating up a good piece of the week. We made the run, came back as fast as we could, loaded our gear, and headed for a new any-bull area in search of a moose. Before making camp, we stopped along the canyon to fish for supper. It was one of those bright fall days when the sun still has some warmth in it. The silvers were running, and these fish don’t make it as far as the fish wheel. It didn’t take long, after barely a minute with the net in the water, a big silver came home with us. We cleaned it on the beach, packed our gear, and went in search of a place to make camp. We found a good spot along a beautiful blue river, tucked among game trails and fresh moose sign. We made camp and settled in to hunt for the day and night. Lena and I gathered highbush cranberries while Dennis hunted the morning and evening hours, walking the country while there was still enough light to see. By afternoon, we decided to load the canoe and float another stretch of water. For the last few weeks of hunting season, we will pick a place to set up a hot tent and camp for a final time. Fall doesn’t give you much time in this country. The days are getting shorter, the nights colder, and winter is waiting just beyond the mountains. This is the season for putting meat away, gathering what the land has to offer, and making ready for what’s coming. And this year, there is a little more time to hunt. It’s now official that subsistence residents will have an extended moose season in one unit, with another unit possibly to be announced.
