It’s getting warmer, the days are stretching out, and we’re getting ready for the summer rush. Before long, our days will be full—fishing, foraging, gardening, and hunting—but first, there’s plenty to do around the homestead. We started by moving some of the livestock. Of the three does that kidded this winter, one group of kids still needs a warmer place to grow, so they’re settling into the baby goat barn with their mama for a little while longer. The rest of the dairy goats have been moved up to the big barn with the Haflingers, and Ike and Wyatt now have a larger pen to share. Before too long, we’re hoping to get hot fencing in place and turn everyone out onto a few acres. We also made a change with the chickens—passing our old flock of hens along to make room for some new girls. We brought home a group of Brahma mixes from town when we picked up the snowcat, and they’ve now settled into the goat barn. Dennis took the snowcat out for a rabbit hunt and came back with a good one. It’ll be headed for the soup pot, and Lena’s excited to try working with the hide. With the warmer weather finally here, it’s time to get back in the saddle too. Sanford has his new tack—now it’s Ike and Wyatt’s turn.
