The last days of moose hunting season is coming to a close- and we have been using every one to try and fill the freezer with red meat for winter. We saw more bulls in this country than anywhere, and this unit is still open to us as subsistence residents to hunt for an extended season. A week may not seem like much, but the temps are dropping- moose move more, the rut comes on, and they get easier to call in. We aren't looking for a trophy bull, the size of the rack doesn’t interest us. We are hunting for meat, to use the whole animal, and make the most of the harvest. Interior Alaska moose hunting is a challenge, and we are working hard to meet it. Dennis and Jamie took days and the canoe to search for one to bring home. This kind of hunting isn't in a tree stand, off a boat, or dropped by plane to game dense areas- they are spot and stalking, hiking miles up ridges and through creeks. At the end of the day, “tired” doesn't cut it. Caribou, big grizzly, cows and bulls spotted. Now to take one home. This is not the end of season for us. The reality is a hunt may take more than a week- and we are still searching.
