January in Alaska is not an ideal time for goats to be born, our average temp at night being around -20. If the goats kid, the babies will have only minutes before its too late. We recently rescued 3 pregnant does who were heading to slaughter, all due any day. Alder was the first to kid with 2 bucks, caught just in time. Having dairy animals on the homestead is something we enjoy (as the nearest grocery is 3+ hours round trip). Now we need to build a wind tight space for them to transition out of the kidding box before heading to the big goat barn with the rest of the herd. Pretty soon we will have another doe ready to deliver, and she will need that heated kidding box on the porch to have her babies. Dennis converted a summer chicken coop for this purpose, and we capped the day with some of our salmon from last season and cocoa with homemade marshmallows. The work isn't over yet, with 160 bales of hay to haul and water to be gathered at the creek. But, we are ready for new babies to be born safely on the homestead!
