Currently Playing: Early Winter Alaska - Subsistence Spearfishing & Beaver Trapping

The start of the whitefish run is underway, and we headed out to scout out how many are in the river. Whitefish are an abundant source of protein and fats to stock up on for the winter to come, and we plan on making the most of the run. Their migration is quiet, when the ice starts to form on the bottom of the rivers. These fish need to be caught in total darkness, something once done with birch bark torches. Related to salmon, but living much longer (20 years or so), and spawning multiple times- these guys are a late fall and early winter staple before the winter and caribou hunts. Dennis checked the first beaver set of the season too- and came home with a beaver for food, tools, and fur!
