The salmon seemed like they just arrived, and now its time to pull the fish wheel and start prepping for hunting season. One unit it is open for subsistence moose hunting already (though its very warm still), and the rest will follow. We have a few different hunts planned to secure meat for winter! The last big run of fish have come and gone, and even though we are picking off a few every day- we need to shut the wheel down while we are away on hunts. We cant keep an eye on it and check it everyday, and leaving it floating in the water (even shut down) would be a risk. We headed down to the river for one last check of the season, and started winching her out and onto the bank. Once it was safely tied to shore, we headed into the backcountry and back to one of our old moose camps to check it out for the coming season. An ideal spot for packing in the horses, we cant wait to spend some time in the woods here this season! On the way, we picked up our moose tags and foraged for some more mushrooms - and berries have started to arrive too. Blues, crows, highbush cranberry, and buffalo berry all have started to emerge. Dennis had a new hunting rifle to sight in, a 300 win mag. With both of us planning to hunt this season, it was time to get a second hunting rifle. We hope it will serve us well for years to come! Once we got the new rifle sighted, we headed back to the cabin for dinner. Blueberry & Birch Syrup Glazed Smoked Salmon, Broccoli from the garden and wild mushrooms for dinner. A simple meal, but one we worked hard to put together; fish from the wheel, syrup from the trees around the homestead, garden goods and foraged berries and mushrooms. We are so thankful to have it all, and thankful to be able to cook it over a fire together at the end of a day well spent.
