We are down to the final days of moose season. The rut is on, calling is becoming effective, and thats just what Dennis and Jamie did- covering miles of country on their latest trip. Lena and I held down the homestead. First and last light we went out on Ike, scouting, and we took Wyatt and Drum on a bird hunt. A ride about 5 miles into the country behind the cabin rewarded us with 2 birds for dinner. We got a start on firewood, which we are sorely behind on this year, and harvested part of the garden- fermenting cabbage, harvesting potatoes, and hanging herbs to dry for food and medicine. We bagged a bunny to go with dinner too while we foraged berries- a caribou bone broth soup with spruce hen, and veggies from the garden. The eastern interior winter comes on quick, and our first snow landed a couple days before the hunting season ended. In a matter of a couple months, we will be seeing temps as cold as -50. Supplies need to be restocked before winter really closes in, demanding a 12 hour+ trip to town- 8 cords of wood needs to be stacked, and the snowcat fixed to help keep access to the cabin open. We have a lot to do to prepare, but hunting season has an expiration date. One more day of moose season left- then its black bear, winter caribou and moose hunts for red meat to fill the freezer.
