Currently Playing: Why Your Body Still Reacts Years After Gaslighting

Why does your body still react years after gaslighting, even when what happened sounds small? In this episode, Dr. Christine Baker (LPC, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner) follows gaslighting forward in time and explains what happens in your nervous system in the moment, in the hours and days after, and over months and years. You'll also learn a gentle practice called "Then and Now Hands" for feeling the past while staying anchored in the present. This is part 4 of a 5-part series on gaslighting and the body. 🎯 What You'll Learn: • Why gaslighting works like a slow leak, with no single moment you can point to • Why replaying conversations may be your mind trying to finish what your body couldn't • Dr. Peter Levine's idea of unfinished survival responses and why they stay in the body • Dr. Stephen Porges' neuroception: how your nervous system can brace around kind people because of a pattern it learned • Dr. Bessel van der Kolk's work on disconnection from the body's signals • How self-doubt can slowly become your baseline, and why that doesn't mean you're losing your grip on reality ✨ The Then and Now Hands Practice: 1. Rest one hand somewhere steady (your now hand) and feel its warmth, its weight, and the support under you 2. Place your other hand a little further away, palm up (your then hand), and notice what shows up with no story or details 3. Come back to your now hand and go back and forth gently, showing your body that both can be in the room at once 4. Finish by naming one thing that's true now Start with something low in intensity, stay in charge, and stop anytime. If this stirs up a lot, consider bringing a therapist or support person alongside you. This episode is part of a five-part series on gaslighting and the body. Next week: how to trust yourself again after gaslighting and come back to your internal compass.
