In 1987, a company called Insignia Solutions launched one of the earliest PC emulators — SoftPC. It let you run DOS and Windows software on your non-PC machine — entirely in software, no x86 hardware required. In this episode, I explore SoftPC and SoftWindows on a 1993 Macintosh Performa 450. From MS-DOS 3.3 to Windows 3.1, from Norton benchmarks to clipboard sharing — what worked, what didn’t, and what it tells us about the early days of software-based cross-platform emulation.
