For most of its history, Apple built personal computers - not servers. But in 2002, that changed with the introduction of the Apple Xserve. Designed as a true 1U data center machine and paired with Mac OS X Server 10.2, it marked Apple’s most serious attempt to be taken seriously in enterprise IT. With Mac OS X's UNIX foundations inherited from NeXT, the Xserve represented a turning point both in Apple’s operating system and server story. In this episode, we trace the road from the Apple Workgroup Servers and the short-lived Apple Network Server detour, up to the G4-based Xserve, to its quiet discontinuation in 2011. This is a hands-on look at Apple’s brief but ambitious data center chapter, and what remains of it today.
