When Be, Inc. disappeared in 2001, it looked like BeOS had reached a dead end. But that was only the beginning of a much longer afterlife. In this video, I trace what happened next: the leaked BeOS R5.1 “Dano” builds, the rise of unofficial community spins like BeOS 5 PE Max, and yellowTAB’s controversial revival attempt with Zeta. Then there was the community’s most ambitious path of all: rebuilding BeOS from scratch. I look at how OpenBeOS became Haiku, and which parts of the original BeOS code could legally be reused in the new project.
