Currently Playing: Restoring the NeXTstation Color: The True Origins of Mac OS X [Part 1]

Sponsored by PCBWay: https://pcbway.com/g/ynWgss Step back into 1988 and 1990, straight into the world of NeXT, Steve Jobs’s most influential work after leaving Apple. We explore some of the history behind NeXT and the company’s ambitious attempt to redefine workstation computing. From the original black NeXT Cube to the later slab machines, from Canon’s investment to the object.station line, this episode connects the hardware, the software, and the legacy. On the bench, I open the NeXTstation for inspection, work through the NVRAM issues, and wrestle with SCSI quirks using ZuluSCSI and SCSI2SD before finally getting NeXTSTEP installed and running. NeXTSTEP was the OS that would years later become the foundation to Rhapsody, Mac OS X Server 1.0, and eventually, OS X (or macOS, as it's known today). This is part one of the story. Next Sunday we explore the NeXTSTEP desktop, the Workspace Manager, and the software ecosystem, including office tools, early web browsers, and of course DOOM, before taking a look at contemporary virtualization in part three.
