Currently Playing: Apple’s Lost UNIX: Installing A/UX 2.0 on the Mac SE/30 (Pt. 1 of 2)

Apple once built its own UNIX. And yes — it ran on Macs. This is Part 1 of my deep-dive into A/UX, Apple’s almost forgotten UNIX-based operating system from the late 1980s and early 90s. Installed on a freshly revived Macintosh SE/30, we explore how to get A/UX 2.0 running on a Macintosh SE/30: From partition layouts, recreating 800K floppies to the System 6 requirement and some other struggles along the way. It’s not just retro computing — it’s retro UNIX, with a twist of Macintosh Finder tossed in. In Part 2, we’ll dive deeper into application compatibility, how Apple tried to make the UNIX command line GUI-friendly, how bypass a stuck routing daemon, and how to multi-boot with System 7. Did you ever use A/UX? Or run into it at school or work? Drop your memories in the comments.
