It’s Christmas time — and what better way to celebrate than with some handheld nostalgia? In this Christmas special, I’m building the LEGO Nintendo Game Boy and placing it side-by-side with my original Game Boy from 1989. LEGO did an amazing job with the details, from the cartridge to the holographic inserts recreating startup moments from Super Mario Land and Zelda. Size and even weight are surprisingly close to the real one. After the build, I take on a small repair project: the Nintendo Light Boy. A magnifier + light accessory that once made late-night gaming possible — but this one had leaked battery damage and dead lamps. I cleaned up the contact plates, fixed the intermittent connection, and even tried experimenting with LEDs for better brightness. In the end, the LEGO Game Boy, the real one, and the restored Light Boy make a lovely little office exhibit — and of course, the Game Boy is always ready for a quick round of Tetris.
