Getting an original IBM PC or XT onto Ethernet is not as simple as dropping in any old ISA network card. In this episode, I take a close look at a modern open source 8-bit ISA Ethernet adapter designed for early PC-compatible machines, including the IBM PC 5150 and PC XT 5160, and see how it compares to contemporary network cards such as the 3Com Etherlink II and the InterLAN NI5010. Plus, we'll deal with out-of-memory situations, coax cabling, lots of jumpers for IRQs and I/O addresses, and a very unexpected modern-meets-vintage moment when an AI helped me edit a batch file.
