This machine looks unusual even by 1990s standards. The BeBox wasn’t designed to blend in with contemporary PCs, but to demonstrate a new kind of operating system. With its dual PowerPC 603e processors and iconic front-panel “Blinkenlights” visualizing CPU activity in real time, it represents Be Inc.’s bold vision for BeOS: an OS build from the ground up for symmetric multiprocessing and responsive multimedia workloads. In this episode, we take a detailed look inside the BeBox hardware—from its full-size AT motherboard and unusual GeekPort I/O interface to the design trade-offs of running two CPUs without any L2 cache. We power on the system running BeOS 4.5, explore its multitasking and revisit classic demos like the OpenGL teapot.
