Mac OS X 10.0 was Apple’s most ambitious operating system shift since the original Macintosh — and also one of its most controversial. Built on a UNIX foundation inherited from NeXT, it promised stability, modern multitasking, and a bold new Aqua interface. But the real story is how Apple tried to get there without breaking the entire Mac ecosystem overnight. In this episode, we look at how Apple pivoted away from the original Rhapsody plan, why Carbon became a necessary compromise, and how the Classic environment evolved from Blue Box into something consumer-ready. We walk through the OS X Public Beta, the early installation experience, Classic vs Carbon vs Cocoa, and what it was actually like to live with Mac OS X 10.0 when performance, compatibility, and expectations were all in flux.
