Sponsored by PCBWay: https://pcbway.com/g/ynWgss Rhapsody might have looked like the classic Mac OS, but underneath it was something entirely different: Apple’s transitional step from NeXTSTEP to Mac OS X. In this second part of my Rhapsody journey, I explore the quirks and rough edges of Mac OS X Server 1.x on the Blue & White PowerMac G3. From ZIP drive integration and limited file system support, to the isolation of the Blue Box environment, it quickly becomes clear how incomplete this system still was. Updating the system from version 1.0 to 1.0.2 brings some unexpected changes, and even reveals why a mysterious “1.1” release never really existed. Finally, I take a closer look at the jump to Mac OS X Server 1.2 and 1.2v3, which brought G4 support — and see how all of this tied directly into the development of Mac OS X 10.0.
