Currently Playing: Can an IBM PC Portable Run Linux with Ethernet?

Can an IBM PC Portable 5155 run something Linux-like? In this episode, we go back to Linux-8086, better known today as ELKS, and see what it takes to bring a trimmed-down UNIX-like system to an 8088 machine with just 512 K of RAM. Along the way, I install an NE2000-compatible Ethernet card, run into the infamous slot 8 trap, remove a 5161 expansion warning, add XT-IDE Compact Flash storage, copy a MINIX hard disk image using dd, and configure ELKS networking. The result is a tiny 16-bit Linux environment with TCP/IP, telnet, FTP, and even a simple HTTP server running on a an original IBM PC Portable from 1984!
