Can you build a practical peer-to-peer network using DOS, two vintage PCs, and Token Ring? In this episode, I install Novell DOS 7 and its built-in Personal NetWare, connect a 486 to an IBM PS/1 Model 2011, and explore how Novell brought file and printer sharing to small workgroup networks without requiring a dedicated server. Along the way, I troubleshoot an incompatible Link Support Layer, configure IBM and Xircom Token Ring adapters, and fight for every last byte of conventional memory on a 1 MB 286 running PC DOS 4. After HIMEM.SYS, DPMS, VLM, NWCACHE, and several startup-file adjustments, the two systems finally exchange files at roughly 279 kilobits per second, while demonstrating Personal NetWare’s shares, drive mapping, diagnostics, monitoring tools, and server console.
