In this episode of my NeXT Exploration series, we go beyond classic emulation: instead of re-implementing the Mac Toolbox like Executor did, Daydream runs real Macintosh System 7 code on NeXT hardware — using original Macintosh ROMs and a custom kernel acting as a hardware abstraction layer. We’ll install Daydream plus the Darkmatter community patch to boot straight into Macintosh System Software on the NeXTstation. Then we'll even upgrade the included System 7.1 to System 7.5 and 7.5.3! Quix Computerware AG (Ebikon, Switzerland) got lots of praise for Daydream in 1995, and fell victim to Apple’s Mac OS licensing terms. A fascinating dead-end timeline of computing history… where a NeXT truly became a Macintosh.
