The Dassault Mystère IV was France’s first truly effective swept-wing fighter, bridging the gap between early post-war jets and the supersonic Mirage generation. This video traces its difficult development, from transonic instability and engine troubles to a mature and reliable combat aircraft. In it, I investigate how it performed in French service, and how Israel and India used it extensively in real conflicts through the 1950s, 60s, and early 70s. The Mystère IV was never the fastest or most powerful jet of its era, but it proved to be a durable and practical fighter-bomber that earned its place in Cold War air power history.
