Curated by: Not A Pound For Air To Ground (219 videos)
Air-to-air refuelling is now a routine part of modern air warfare, but its origins lie in a series of little-known experiments before and during the Second World War. Beginning with Sir Alan Cobham’s pioneering work in the 1930s, engineers in Britain, the United States and Germany explored ways to extend the range of bombers and fighters through mid-air fuel transfer. This video examines those early developments, the ambitious wartime plans such as Tiger Force, and why operational refuelling did not arrive until after the war.
