The challenge of providing suitable escort for intercontinental jet bombers vexed strategic planners in the late 1940s and early 1950s. Since no fighter could be designed with adequate range and performance, their next move was to design towed and docked fighters that could be released by the bombers when enemy interceptors appeared.
