In 1945 the USAAF sought a jet powered, very long range escort fighter that could clear the skies ahead of its bombers. This was the first penetration fighter and the attempt to develop it was a significant part of second and third generation fighter development in the USA. Sources: "McDonnell XF-88 Voodoo" by Steve Pace is an excellent source on the first Voodoo... which is lucky, because its essentially the only book on the type!
