The Regia Marina were early pioneers in the use of seaplanes for spotting shell fire. Lacking conventional aircraft carriers, they continued to use seaplanes for this purpose and, latterly, for rudimentary air defence through to the end of the Second World War. This video introduces the main types and their use aboard various ships during the First World War, the interwar period and the Second World War.
