Curated by: Not A Pound For Air To Ground (219 videos)
After German Gotha bomber raids on London in 1917, British planners began searching for new ways to counter massed bomber formations. This led to an unusual interwar idea: heavily armed “gun fighters” equipped with large-calibre Coventry Ordnance Works cannons intended to engage bombers from unconventional angles. In this video I look at the aircraft built around that concept, including ambitious multi-seat designs and single-seat fighters that mounted 37 mm guns firing upward. Although the approach ultimately proved impractical, it played a role in shaping later RAF thinking about fighter armament and bomber interception.
