I recently received an email from Tim, who’s an aerospace engineer and has done some great research on Colonel John Boyd’s theories. In our conversation he reminded me about one of Boyd’s lesser known works - the New Conception for Air-to-Air Combat. I thought that rather than keeping it to ourselves, I’d make a video about it. New Conception is interesting because in it, Boyd reassesses his previous theories on fighter performance based on new empirical data. What emerges is a set of characteristics for a next generation aircraft that sound eerily similar to what would eventually be produced in the F-22. In doing so, he also trailed his future work about military strategy. Thanks again to Tim for the original email.
