Greenland has been in the news recently because of an upsurge in interest in military operations in the Arctic. This isn't actually a new thing. During the Cold War a small, but expensive, long-running and high-end military operation used parts of Greenland as a sensor station, then a trip wire and a waystation for nuclear bombers. And these were just the sane uses: there were other, wilder plans that began with deploying a secret nuclear reactor to an under-ice base in the high Arctic.
