A major blast from the past here. I've been a pretty diehard fan of Go Nagai since watching Tranzor Z as a young one- I can recall schoolyard arguments about how Tranzor/ Mazinger Z could beat up a Veritech/ Valkyrie any day of the week. The show blew me away. The colors, the hot blooded yelling, majorly bad baddies, lots of cool robot designs, wanton destruction, robotic violence and mayhem... it left a lasting impression. This book however was a major catalyst in my collecting habits. Discovering it in the early 90s, putting two and two together with who made this and what it was (there's a quick essay about Nagai in the back that mentions the big Z robot) is probably one of the key ingredients in setting me on a course of discovering manga, alongside the Eclipse issues of Appleseed (I was initially disappointed as I thought Adams drew the whole thing, but I certainly found just as nice of treat awaiting me). This book is basicaly mech porn. There's a paper thin story that exists as an excuse to draw cool robots fighting with cool weapons. There's also a fantasy world our pilot falls into, and only his Mazinger suit can help save the constantly naked princess from the multi- armed reptile people that live there... do you see why this was a match made in heaven for 14 year old me? There's no denying it looks cool. It also probably served as the inspiration for Mazin Saga, a manga that features a similarly designed suit of Mazinger armor with a similar mix of fantasy and junk tech post apocalypse. See if you can fish a copy out of the bargain bins like I did all those years ago!
