I own very few "modern" Marvel books. Probably half a dozen at most. I've got plenty of vintage collections mind you, and I've read tons of relatively current stuff, but OWN it? Not a whole lot. I will admit to my shallowness and bought this purely for the art. I dig Tradd Moore's stuff. He was good when he was drawing Luther Strode and he's only gotten better since. While not overtly manga- ish, it gives off a lot of that energy in the way Moore positions people and has them engage in action. I'm reminded of Baki's Itagaki or Takayuki Yamaguchi's work in how all these artists revel in the physicality of the action, with emphasis placed on the strength and form of their fighters (also they all tend to have incredibly violent work, but you won't find Moore going off the rails here like he did with Luther Strode). Not only is the action super kinetic but the backgrounds and colors involved are quite the sumptuous feast. As the Surfer travels through this book I feel like I'm being exposed to Ditko's first forays into the Dark Dimension, which was a pretty eye opening experience as a kid (I had an old view finder with the story of Dormamu and the Mindless Ones when I was tiny). ...and there's a story too! It's a pretty good one too! It doesn't really tie in to all the continuity baggage that seems to plague current comics. It just does its own thing, and having read lots of Surfer stories over the years it was an interesting take as he dwells on his actions over the course of his career. Like I said, I don't usually do modern Marvel books, but when they want to try something different, and look DAMN good doing it, yeah, I'll be there.
