I've long had a soft spot for guys in rubber monster suits stomping their way through miniature cities. Doesn't matter the setting- fantasy, modern day, or bleak dystopian cyberpunk hellholes. Nihei's work certainly falls into the latter. Lots of black, bleak landscapes with all manner of ramshackle buildings stacked on top of each other, a subject matter that Nihei is quite famous for depicting in many of his works. Abara focuses on the "Gauna" a type of bio- organic monster system similar to the Guyver units, for those that remember that series. There's good Gauna and bad ones, and over the course of the book they get to go at each other and look cool doing it. The story meanders at a leisurely pace, dropping vague hints and explanations as the story progresses. It hits a lot of familiar notes if you've experienced Nihei's works- ancient tech, secret organizations, all kinds of odd tech, and cool looking armor. I like having it in a nice compact edition. The Japanese versions were much larger, like the collected Blame! editions. Plus this is hardcover as well. Definitely a fun book to ogle and spend an afternoon flipping through.
