Currently Playing: Dark Horse Comics: Raiders by Crom and Daniel Freedman

Not sure exactly where I first came across this, but glad I did. I'm a sucker for boldly drawn fantasy comics and the cover of this book drew me right to it. I'd seen some of Crom's Birdking art before and dug his style- I can see a bit of Mignola influence in his use of lines and shadows. What I expected to be a typical tropey dungeon romp ended up being a more personal story about family and fighting against an unjust system- both story notes that I tend to enjoy. They did manage to throw a bit of good old fashioned dungeon delving and monster slaying into the mix while they were at it, because why wouldn't you want to have a bit of that in a gritty fantasy book? The book was a quick read. Sometimes I'd consider that a negative, but in this case I'd say it was a positive. I wanted to read it and burned through it quite quickly. Freedman's script has a good pace but at times I do wish there was a bit more. I like that there's hints of world building as the story progresses but before you get any real meat to it you're already finished. I guess that's a plus still, as I could pull the book off the shelf and ogle the art for an afternoon, especially when paired with a beverage of choice and some other fun fantasy books like Orc Stain or Head Lopper. I included links to Crom's Patreon, Instagram, and his personal store as he has some slick looking art to check out and pick up. There's also a link to Amazon if you want to get the book as well. Some of his Dark Souls prints are quite tempting...
