I have a very soft spot in my heart for past visions of the future. I love spaceship designs from the 40s and 50s, long before I was ever born. I adore the strange alien planets and lifeforms artists would dream up. Basil Wolverton has always been an unsung hero of mine. I first discovered him either in junior high or early high school... at the library of all places. I discovered a lot of things at the library, come to think of it. This book is part biography, part behind the scenes production look, and part comic archive. The material ranges from caricatures, comedy strips, newspaper promo comics, and all sorts of glorious retro space action! While the horror comic work Wolverton became more well known for is being saved for volume 2, and Spacehawk is mostly absent (due to having his own collection of strips reprinted separately), there's some pretty impressive stuff on display here. Wolverton seems most in his element on alien worlds with all sorts of vividly colored strangeness on display. He also used a stippling effect to evoke shadows and depth that a lot of artists weren't really using in comic art at that time- and still don't! It gives his work in unique strangeness that helps it stand out from a lot of his contemporaries, which unfortunately wasn't enough to get him the accolades he deserved at the time. If you enjoy classic scifi art, do take a look. I promise you won't be disappointed!
