Newel K Whitney breaks his ankle as Joseph is traveling to see the elders. Joseph has to stay with Bishop Whitney and the tremendous weight of all that was going on and what had happened to him came to the surface. In the midst of this, Joseph writes a letter to his wife, Emma, where we see the sorrow of losing three children as well as an adopted son. We see him talk about Hyrum losing his daughter who died in her father's arms. This letter is in the hand of Joseph and gives a sample of how hard life was for them and for so many others that lived in that time.
