Smoking an American Spirit Bold Cigarette from Canada (Review) from Canada, which is the stronger of the two AS varieties offered on the Canadian market, and are comparable to the Blues, as that is actually what these used to be before plain packaging went into effect. Natural American Spirit is an American additive-free cigarette brand that was first introduced in 1982, and throughout the 1990's, it slowly started to rise in popularity. Then, in 2002, RJ Reynolds bought the brand for $340 million dollars, and since that point, the brand has exploded in popularity. Today, inside the United States, NAS is much more popular than not, and is the largest additive-free brand by far, and is currently produced in North Carolina by the Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company, a subsidiary of RJR. However, outside of the United States, including in Canada, AS is instead produced by Japan Tobacco (specifically, JTI-Macdonald Corp. in Canadia), who purchased the international rights to the brand in 2015 for $5 billion dollars, and from what I can tell, within Canada, the brand is not particularly popular, but has driven out it's own niche nonetheless.
