Smoking a du Maurier Signature Cigarette (Review) from Canada, which is a high-end full-flavor product. du Maurier is an old cigarette brand of British-origin that was first introduced in 1930, and was named after Gerald du Maurier, a notable English actor at that time, who himself enjoyed cigarettes, although supposedly not his own branded cigarettes, ironically enough. One interesting tidbit about the brand's namesake is that he was directly related to the inspirations for the characters in Peter Pan, as his nephews were the original foundations for the play and book written by J. M. Barrie. Amusingly enough, he also acted in the original play version of Peter Pan when it first released as well. Found this information too interesting to not share, so had to do it of course. I'm getting off topic though, I'll acknowledge. It appears that DM, as a brand, became popular quite quickly after their initial release in the UK, but supposedly by the 1950's and 60's, the popularity waned, and they were eventually taken off the shelves in their home market. It's not clear exactly when DM’s were introduced into the Canadian-market, but we do know that the Canadian rights to the brand were sold to British American Tobacco's Canadian subsidiary in 1954, who then either introduced them into the market at that point, or continued to sell them. Within Canada, this brand is sold as a higher-end cigarette meant to ooze sophistication, and while the packaging might not give off that impression today, they are still priced higher than not. Today, du Maurier is only sold within Canada, and is still owned and produced by British American Tobacco's Canadian subsidiary, Imperial Tobacco, and seems to be quite the successful brand today.
