American Tries Canadian Marlboro Cigarettes for the First Time, which are not the same as the ones sold in the United States, nor anywhere else in the world. But why? Well, Marlboro is an American cigarette brand that was first introduced in the early 1920's by Philip Morris, but at that time, the brand was unsuccessful, even after having tried a handful of different marketing ideas. As such, the nameplate was taken off the market in the United States in the early 1930's, and PM attempted to regain some of their losses by selling the Canadian rights to the brand, and they did just that in 1932, selling the rights to Imperial Tobacco Canada, now a subsidiary of British American Tobacco, with no relation to Imperial Brands, and that is where the different two Marlboros we know today, one American, one Canadian, come into existence. As many of you may know, starting in the mid-1950's, the big M became very successful in the US, and in the rest of the world soon there-after, and today the brand is the best selling brand in the USA, and in many countries around the world as well. Unsurprisingly, due to this success, Philip Morris tried to get the Canadian rights to the nameplate back time and time again, but were never successful, as Imperial Tobacco Canada realized they could benefit off of the worldwide success of American Marlboros, and to do just that, the Canadian version also adopted a "cowboy" aesthetic in the 1970's, but without the standard rooftop packaging, as they only had the rights to the name, not the packaging design. Realizing that M was not going to come back to them, PM created a brand called "Rooftop" with the standard ribbon design that we all know today, but with no actual name on the packaging. Unsurprisingly though, this caused a lawsuit, as ITC claimed that doing that confused customers, and they actually won the lawsuit, forcing PM to change the branding somewhat. These days, Rooftop is no longer sold within Canada, but as I'm sure is obvious, Marlboro still is. Canadian M’s are still produced by ITC today, and from what I can tell are not the most popular by any means, but are still sold at pretty much every gas station and convenience store, so I figure they must still sell better than not.
