Smoking a Swedish Cigarette for the First Time.. What I had in specific was the John Silver Original Filtered Cigarettes, a full-flavor offering from Japan Tobacco International. John Silver, as a brand, was first introduced in 1947 by the Tobaksmonopolet, the old Swedish tobacco monopoly, and was named after the pirate Long John Silver from the book Treasure Island. The nameplate's first product was an unfiltered American-blend cigarette, having been inspired by American products that were imported during World War 2, was not a success. Not due to any fault of the blend, but instead due to supply chain issues. However, by 1952, the problems had been fixed, and JS cigarettes were re-launched that same year, and by 1958 had become the best selling domestic brand on the market within Sweden, and due to the rise in filtered offerings in the 1960's, they got their own as well starting in 1966. Later on down the line, in the 1990's, the brand got sold from company to company, eventually landing in the hands of Japan Tobacco International, who still produces it today. From what I can tell, JS is one of the more popular domestic brands of cigarettes within Sweden these days, but truly how popular, I do not know, but it does appear that many consider them to be very iconic nonetheless.
