Smoking a Macdonald Original Cigarette (Review) from Canada. McD is an old Canadian tobacco brand and company that was founded by William Christopher Macdonald and his brother Augustine in 1858, and started life producing pipe and chewing tobacco. Very quickly, the company saw an opportunity during the American Civil War, as the North was experiencing major tobacco shortages. To capitalize on this, they purchased Confederate Tobacco from the south, shipped it to their factory in Canada, processed it into usable products, and then sold it to the American North, which I find to be quite amusing, especially since this was how the company truly got their start financially. By the early 1900's, the company had grown quite successful, and after World War 1, cigarettes and roll-your-own tobaccos were introduced into their lineup, which then quickly became a mainstay of the brand, and is, unsurprisingly, still what they’re known for today. Skipping forward 50 or so years, the company was sold off to the R.J. Reynolds in 1974, who then sold it to Japan Tobacco in 1999 when selling all of their international assets, and this is when the McD we know today begins. Today, the nameplate is still, technically speaking, both a company and a brand, now a part of the namesake for Japan Tobacco's Canadian subsidiary, JTI-Macdonald Corp.
