Step inside Pakistan's City of the Dead as we explore the incredible Makli Necropolis, one of the largest and most remarkable cemeteries in the world. Covering vast hills near Thatta in Sindh, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to hundreds of thousands of tombs built over more than 400 years. But Makli is much more than a cemetery. It's an open-air museum of Islamic architecture, history, and craftsmanship. In this walking tour, I'm joined by local guide Ahmed, who takes us through some of Makli's most impressive monuments while sharing the fascinating stories behind the rulers, saints, nobles and scholars buried here. Together we explore magnificent mausoleums, intricate sandstone carvings, beautiful blue glazed tiles, hidden courtyards, and one of Pakistan's most overlooked historical treasures. Makli Necropolis was established between the 14th and 18th centuries and became the final resting place of the Samma, Arghun and Tarkhan dynasties, as well as Mughal nobles and influential religious figures. The monuments reflect a unique blend of Islamic, Persian, Central Asian and local Sindhi architectural styles. Many feature extraordinary stone carving, geometric patterns, Arabic calligraphy and glazed tilework that have survived for centuries despite the harsh climate. Although Makli is recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it remains one of Pakistan's least-visited historical attractions.
