At the incredible Chaukhandi Tombs near Karachi, our guide pointed out something I would have completely missed - the carvings aren't just decorative. Many of them are inspired by Ralli, the traditional patchwork quilts of Sindh, with intricate geometric patterns carefully carved into sandstone centuries ago. The Chaukhandi Tombs date mainly from the 15th to 18th centuries and are the burial place of local tribal leaders, warriors, and their families, particularly from the Jokhio tribe. Every tomb tells a story through its carvings, featuring floral motifs, jewellery, weapons, horsemen, and geometric designs that reflect the lives and traditions of the people buried here. It's one of Pakistan's most fascinating yet overlooked historical sites, where art, history, and local culture come together in stone.
